New Website is Up and Running!

After much work, I'm happy to say my new photo website, Kara Stewart, Art in Photography, is done! Well, done enough for now and I can keep making minor tweaks as time goes by.
I have my site through smugmug (which I adore for their outstanding customer service, support heroes and print quality). They recently updated their interface, which means that photogs who have sites there need to work through their new sites to upgrade them on the new interface. You can keep the old one for a while, but eventually you'll have to convert, so I went ahead and did it.

Flip Flop Alert
I may be having just a little too much fun designing this latest Zazzle product! These Sandalai sandals feature a custom printed rubber sponge footbed and a comfortable, flexible toe strap. You can choose a black or white toe strap and black or white footbed. Zazzle says it took them three years to find a flip flop partner they'd be proud to have on the platform, and that Sandalai delivers top quality printing on an actual comfortable rubber footbed that is not a throw-away product like some others.
That being said, they are a fun, summery product to design! I need to come up with some more patterns to put on them (yikes, sink into addictive design mode or continue with my social summer?). I meant to design just one pair last night, but ended up with a few:

Recipe Break!
This recipe has been circulating on Facebook; it looked good, so I decided to try it. Aaaand . . . it's great! I just changed it a little to split the 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese into 1/4 cup grated Parmesan and 1/4 cup shredded Italian blend cheeses. And I went heavy on the olive oil. No smidge for me!
Ingredients
4 medium, fresh zucchini, sliced in half
1/2 cup fresh Parmesan cheese, grated
1-2 tablespoons fresh rosemary & thyme, minced
smidge of olive oil
salt & pepper to taste
Pre-heat oven to 350F, lightly brush both sizes of the zucchini with olive oil and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Mix cheese and herbs together in a small bowl and sprinkle over the zucchini along with salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 15 minutes and place under the broiler for the last 3-5 minutes until cheese is crispy and browned.

The Good News
Next week is camp week. Youth Camp, that is. More accurately, Sappony Heritage Camp, which is part of our Sappony Heritage Program.
Am I ready for a week of tick checks, mosquito bites, sweaty, smelly me, teens and kids? A week of NO INTERNET and hit or miss cell phone coverage? Those last two hit hard.
But here's the good news: I'll be staying at my remarkable Aunt Lois' (scroll down on the link) house so I'll have a comfortable non-cabin bed and a bathroom (oh, luxury, and thieves, my son will be at my home with our dog so sorry about that); the way the kids and teens want to learn about their heritage is surprisingly awesome, as is the way they form a lasting bond with each other; and the opportunity for adults to reconnect. All good news, and how can you beat any of that?
I'll also take the opportunity for some quiet time at the lake. More good news.
If you'd like to get a small taste of camp, come on out to the Sappony Trail Run this Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Mayo Park in Person County, NC. Registration opens at 7 a.m., 1 mile fun run is at 8:30 a.m., 5k is at 9:00 a.m. The Sappony Trail Run supports our Heritage Camp.

For Teryn
I was embarrassingly old (like, really) when I finally got a grasp on what the lyrics to the song "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan meant. I finally figured out that "young" in the song doesn't mean age, but emotions, attitude and openness - the opposite of bitterness, resentment and close mindedness. A wish for you to stay your best self, no matter what your age.
For a few weeks now, I have wanted to write this post in tribute to my daughter, who just graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and post for her my favorite version of Forever Young, sung by Joan Baez. But I was a little thrown when I found out that this is apparently a graduation song staple, used over and over again in graduation ceremonies for everything from pre-K (oi vey) to college. However, now trite or not, this song has special meaning to me beyond a graduation wish.
Growing up in the 60s and 70s, my family listened to the Beatles on a reel to reel tape player, had Peter Max and peace and love posters (remember that one with the heart and the dove?), listened to Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, folk music, great Motown, had tire-tread sandals, made our own yogurt and bread, grew our own veggies and bean sprouts, eschewed sugar (well, except for the million candy bars I snuck and bought), rocked out to Hair, and listened to Joan Baez non-stop. I took my beloved guitar everywhere with me. I loved all of it. Even my dad's sideburns and purple polyester tank top and purple velveteen shorts. And my mom's psychedelic print dress made of paper. Sorry to call you out, Mom and Dad.
Point being, Forever Young, sung by Joan Baez is a song of multiple meanings to me, and expresses my deepest wishes for my daughter, of whom I am extraordinarily proud.
Teryn has had open heart surgery, and has been through multiple chronic health issues and family issues. Yet still, she graduated high school from the North Carolina School of Science and Math and has worked all through college to pay for her room and board, phone, car and all those things that add up. And throughout it all, she kept on top of her school work, graduating from UNC at Chapel Hill with a double major and a minor.
She has had her tough times, like we all have. She has lived life and made choices and learned, like we all have. But most importantly, she is one strong young woman who will continue to grow and learn about herself and deepen her strength.
